The Book Thief. The Messenger. The Underdog. When Dogs Cry. Fighting Ruben Wolfe. Yes, all of these are titles of books and all of them have the same author, Markus Zusak. He is currently on a tour with his newest book Bridge of Clay and I was lucky enough to meet him at this year’s Derby Book Festival last Monday.

BBC reporter Navtej Johal who interviewed the successful writer asked him about everything all of us eager readers want to know. What is the story behind Bridge of Clay? Does Markus Zusak feel under pressure after the enormous success of The Book Thief? And how does he do it, that he writes about great topics such as love or death with lightness and in the way that people can relate to his texts?

Cítí se Markus Zusak pod tlakem po ohromném úspěchu Zlodějky knih? A jak to dělá, že se dokáže o velkých tématech jako jsou láska a smrt vyjadřovat s jistou lehkostí a způsobem, který čtenářům umožňuje ztotožnit se s jeho texty?

I guess that all of us have some project we have been delaying for quite some time. It can be for days, for months or even for year, as it was for Markus Zusak and his Bridge of Clay. He started writing the story in his 20s but then he began working on other projects and when he came back to Bridge of Clay, he was a different person than when he began writing it. He was even a different person than the one who wrote The Book Thief. Zusak successfully finished the story and we were lucky enough that he read a part of the story to us.

Snad každý máme nějaký projekt, který jsme nějakou dobu odkládali. Můžou to být dny, měsíce nebo dokonce i roky, jak tomu bylo v případě Clayova mostu Markuse Zusaka. Příběh začal psát, když mu bylo kolem 20 let, ale potom přešel k dalším projektům. Když se vrátil ke Cloyovu mostu, byl jiným člověkem, než když ho začal psát. Byl i jiným člověkem než tím, kdo napsal Zlodějku knih. Zusak příběh úspěšně dokončil a my jsme měli to štěstí, že nám dokonce i přečetl část příběhu.

Besides his newest book, Zusak also talked about the unexpected success of The Book Thief, the way he writes his novel and why he’s not going to record another audiobook again but will leave it to professionals. Overall, Markus Zusak has showed us again why he love him so much. He’s a man with a great imagination and full of wit and wisdom. On top of that, he’s very kind and if you’re a nervous mess like me, he can totally save the conversation.

Kromě jeho nové knížky se Zusak rozpovídal i o nečekaném úspěchu Zlodějky knih; způsobu, kterým píše své knihy, a proč už sám nenamluví žádnou ze svých audioknih a raději to přenechá profesionálům. Zkrátka nám Markus Zusak znovu ukázal, proč ho tak moc milujeme. Je to moudrý muž s úžasnou představivostí a báječným smyslem pro humor. Navíc je neuvěřitelně milý, a pokud stejně jako já trpíte nervozitou, tak dokáže zachránit konverzaci.

Anyway, if you have a chance, go meet him while he’s on the tour. You definitely won’t regret it and who knows, maybe you can get his autograph in at least one of your books.
